School Letter Drive
October 24, 2008
We have started our School letter drive and it has ignited an enormous response. We have 19 teachers participating in less than 2 weeks. Most of the teachers have agreed to send letters once a month. How does it work? The teachers email or write to us at Devil Dog Advocates and ask for more information about the drive and how to sign up. We email or mail them a registration form to get more information about their class and how frequently they would like to send letters. Once we receive the registration form we send the teacher a packet with paper, information on the Marines, and a pre paid envelope with an address in Iraq or Afghanistan. The teacher has the students write their letters on the paper provided and puts them in the mail. It is as easy as that. Some Marines may respond to the letters, but as can be expected, they are busy and may not get to respond to all letters.
I think this is an extremely important project, especially around the holidays. If you would like to participate, please send an email to info@devildogadvocates.org to receive a school registration form OR go to our website www.devildogadvocates.org and click on School Letter Drive. You will find the registration form there.
Thank you in advance for your support.
UPCOMING CARE PACKAGE DRIVE IN WATERTOWN, CT
October 21, 2008
Our next care package drive will be on November 8th from 9-4 at the Watertown Meat Center on Main St in Watertown, CT. The Watertown Meat Center is owned by our very own Marketing Manager, Christy Buso. Please come down to the event and drop off items, postage funds, or letters of support to send to Marines deployed overseas. Our last drive in Massachusetts was a huge success. Let’s try and top the 130 boxes we sent from Townsend, Massachusetts. We did receive letters from a few of the commanders we sent care packages to. We will be posting excerpts from those thank you letters on our website.
FYI- Jayne Robtoy is now Jayne Cannava. The Chairman/Founder, Jayne Robtoy, and Vice President of Devil Dog Advocates, Michael Cannava, were married on October 12th.
Recruiting bonuses grow
October 3, 2008
Together, the Army and Marine Corps gave out nearly $640 million in 2007-08 in bonuses to recruit young men and women to join the military.
Some incentives can be as high as $40,000 each including extra promises for education or down payments for homes. The annual cost grew by 25 percent over last year’s totals for the two services, the Associated Press has learned.
Money is the number one recruiting tool in these tough economic times, even as the violence in Afghanistan gets worse.
As a result, the Marine Corps met its recruiting goal for the fiscal year that ended Tuesday.
According to data obtained by the AP, the Army and Marine Corps allocated a bit more than $500 million in bonuses and college fund payments in fiscal year 2007, compared with this year’s total of almost $640 million.
The recruits get a portion of the bonus when they report for training, and get remaining payments when they report for duty.
The Army incentives grew from $443 million in 2007 to $547 million this year, while the Marine bonuses jumped from $66 million to nearly $90 million.
The Marine Corps implements a sliding scale of bonuses depending on what specialty the recruit takes on.
According to the Marines, more than 10,700 enlistment bonuses were handed out in the recently ended fiscal year — or about 33 percent of the recruits who made it to training.
